Think of it as a Secret Ingredient. If the recipe is not revealed to you, or other critics, then you don't even know what's in it. Do you?
It is different, unique, impossible to duplicate without the recipe, and worthy of being called YOUR recipe, no matter what the ingredients.
By your logic, you run the risk of being accused of being a cheater by having a simple sundae. That is, of course, unless you break out the eggs, milk, ice, rock salt, and a little kid to sit on the freezer while you crank it.
An ingredient is still an ingredient regardless of whether it is a simple raw ingredient or a complex mix of even 57 ingredients.
Where are you going to draw the line? Is it illegal to use ketchup? I guess brown sugar might be against the rules too.

So you start YOUR bbq sauce with KC Masterpiece sauce... that isn't allowed. This is YOUR bbq sauce, not some dumbed down version or jazzed up HEINZ brand sauce. That's cheating... That's like a master baker saying he is going to make an incredible cake from 'scratch' and the first ingredient on the list is betty crocker cake mix, with some added sugar and lemon juice.
